Agree on boundaries before buying. Choose understandable equipment with an immediate release and no pressure to use every item.
Make a short shared brief
Before comparing products, each adult can write down what interests them, what is off limits, and what remains undecided. Compare those notes without turning disagreement into a negotiation to overcome. A shared shopping list should reflect actual agreement; a purchase is not permission to use it.
RAINN describes consent as clear, voluntary, specific, and ongoing. Anyone can change their mind. A previous yes, a relationship, or a gift does not establish agreement now. Decide on plain stop language and check-ins, and stop if someone becomes uncertain or unresponsive.

Choose fewer things you understand
A large starter kit can look like a bargain while leaving you with unfamiliar equipment and minimal instructions. Evaluate each item separately. What is it made from? How is it cleaned? How does it release? Can every participant understand the mechanism before it is used? An instruction sheet with no meaningful detail is a reason to keep looking.
For restraint products, prioritize designs intended for adults with accessible, immediate release mechanisms and clear fit guidance. A decorative look or soft lining does not establish safety. Avoid improvised restraints, neck pressure, breath restriction, suspension, and anything that prevents clear communication. Never leave a restrained person alone. This guide is about evaluating a purchase, not teaching restraint techniques.

Decide what a successful evening looks like
It can be as simple as talking through the products and deciding not to use them. There is no obligation to progress through a kit or complete a scenario. Make room for a pause, a change of plan, and a conversation afterward about what felt comfortable or awkward.
From a value perspective, buying one clearly documented item after that conversation is often easier to assess than choosing a box by piece count. Check storage needs, care instructions, and whether components can be replaced. If either person cannot explain the release or feels pressured by the purchase, put it aside. The product should fit the agreement between adults; the agreement should never be stretched to justify the product.
